DeForest T.“Ted” BorgenDeForest Theodore “Ted” Borgen, 84, a resident of the Fond du Lac Lutheran Home, was called home to be with his Lord on Thursday, December 26, 2013.He was born on June 5, 1929 in Galena, Illinois, the oldest son of Theodore and Rosella (Helbach) Borgen. On November 12, 1961 he married Erica Willis.Ted was employed as a semi-truck driver for Cohen Brothers Produce Company. He also worked for the City of Fond du Lac Department of Public Works, Fond du Lac School District, Brenner Tank and retired from Combination Door Company in 1991. As a young man, he served in the 426th Infantry Regiment, Wisconsin Army National Guard, and was Honorably Discharged in 1955. He was also a member of the Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s Deputy Reserve.He enjoyed fishing, woodworking, carving and sketching. His appreciation of Native American culture was reflected in many of his carvings. He loved to laugh and was as big of heart as he was of stature. He will be greatly missed by family and friends.Ted had a deep and abiding faith in God. He was a member of Saint Peter’s Evangelical Lutheran Church and was a strong proponent of Winnebago Lutheran Academy.He is survived by his stepson, John (Karen) Willis of Van Dyne; six grandchildren: Christine Koepke, Cathleen (Edmund) Spanbauer, Michael (Shelley) Willis, Daniel McDermott, Scott (Gerry) McDermott, Robert ( Teri) McDermott; 18 great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Carolyn Denner, and son-in-law, Thomas (Joyce) McDermott. He is further survived by his brothers, Dale (Diane) Borgen, Thomas (Mary) Borgen, and numerous nieces and nephews.He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Erica; a stepdaughter, Kathleen McDermott; a grandson, John McDermott; his granddaughter Christine’s husband, Matthew Koepke; a sister, Darlyene Bedker and her husband Kenneth; a sister-in-law, MaryAnn Borgen; a half-brother, Merwin Schutz and his wife, Henrietta; two brothers-in-law, Arthur and Emil Denner; and three sisters-in-law, Rachel (Claude) Griffith, Thelma Perkins and Lydia Zangl.The funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, December 30, 2013, at St. Peter’s Ev. Lutheran Church, 1600 S. Main St., Fond du Lac, with the Rev. Matthew Guse officiating.Visitation will take place from 9:00 a.m. until the time of service on Monday at the church.Memorials may be directed to St. Peter’s Ev. Lutheran Church and School or Winnebago Lutheran Academy.The family would like to thank the staff of Fond du Lac Lutheran Home, the nurses and physicians of St. Agnes Hospital and Agnesian Hospice Hope for their loving and excellent care. A special thank you is extended to Ted’s longtime physician and friend, Dr. Gabriel Litman.
