Nick "Snickers" G. Nitschke

Father, grandfather, son, brother, friend. The angels knew how tired he was and took him home on Sunday, May 24, 2026. Nick was born on May 15, 1954, in Fond du Lac, WI, a son of Dorothy and Orin Nitschke. As a young boy he moved to Oakfield, WI, where he would spend the remainder of his childhood years. He attended what he likes to call a “Little House on the Prairie” school, a one-room schoolhouse located outside of Oakfield housing grades K-12. In 1972, Nick joined the U.S. Army being stationed in Ft. Leonardwood, MO, Ft. Bliss, TX, Korea, and Ft. Lauderdale, FL. His time spent in the Army deeply shaped his patriotic spirit and outlook on life. In 1972, Nick married Barbara Riegert. Together they raised three boys: Chuck, Cory and Chris. Nick was most proud of his boys, whom he loved fiercely, spending time fishing and hunting with them whenever he could. In his early adult years, he worked for Ralston Purina. In 1984, he began working for Oshkosh Truck Corporation, where he worked until his retirement in 2014. Nick was a dedicated Packer Fan! On football Sunday’s, you would find him dressed in his Packer attire cheering them on. He even had a tattoo commemorating Ray Nitschke on his arm. One of his favorite hobbies was classic cars, with the 1968 Camaro being his favorite! He owned two – one butternut yellow and the other hot cherry red. In the summer, Nick enjoyed cruising on his Harley motorcycle riding to some remote bar or riding for an Honor Guard benefit. If there was a benefit, Nick was there, always stepping up to lend a hand or support those in need. He was never one to complain and believed in living life to the fullest every day. His love for life was infectious, and he had a heart-warming smile that made others smile in return He would be the first one to tell you he had a wonderful life with no regrets. His wish is for all of us to be happy and enjoy life as he never liked to see sad eyes. Nick leaves behind his three boys: Charles N. Nitschke, Cory P. Nitschke (Tanya Lehman) and Christopher S. (Becky) Nitschke; three beautiful granddaughters: Autumn, Aubrey and Allie; four sisters: Virginia Dewitz, Darlene (Wayne) Wischnefski, Barbara Post and Jane Galligan: two brothers: Edward (Sherry Nitschke, and Orin (Mary) Nitschke, Jr. along with favorite cousin and lifetime friend Chuck (Robin) Balthazor, and his girlfriend Barbara Forbes. He was preceded in death by his parents, and nephew David Dewitz. Always on our minds and forever in our hearts, Nick will be missed by so many who knew him, loved him and called him a friend. VISITATION: Family will greet friends and relatives from 11:00 AM – 1:00 PM on Saturday, June 6, 2026, at Kurki Funeral Chapel & Crematory, 31 East Division Street, Fond du Lac. SERVICE: Memorial services will be held at 1:00 PM on Saturday, June 6, 2026, at Kurki Funeral Chapel & Crematory, with his brother Edward Nitschke officiating. Military services to follow.
