Joanne L. Johannes

September 18, 1936 - January 13, 2022

Joanne L. Johannes, 85, died on Thursday, January 13, 2022 at Peabody Manor in Appleton, following her savior Jesus into death so that she also might follow him to life eternal. Psalm 73:23-26 Nevertheless, I am continually with you; you hold my right hand. 24 You guide me with your counsel, and afterward you will receive me to glory. 25 Whom have I in heaven but you? And there is nothing on earth that I desire besides you. 26 My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever. (ESV) Joanne was born on September 18, 1936, in Manitowoc, the daughter of Elmer W. and Alma L. Gauger Paulmann. Psalm 139:14-18, “I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well. 15 My frame was not hidden from you, when I was being made in secret, intricately woven in the depths of the earth. 16 Your eyes saw my unformed substance; in your book were written, every one of them, the days that were formed for me, when as yet there was none of them. 17 How precious to me are your thoughts, O God! How vast is the sum of them! 18 If I would count them, they are more than the sand. I awake, and I am still with you.” (ESV) On October 11, 1936 Joanne was baptized into Christ in the new birth of water and the Spirit at First German Lutheran Church in Manitowoc, WI. Titus 3:4-7, “But when the goodness and loving kindness of God our Savior appeared, 5 he saved us, not because of works done by us in righteousness, but according to his own mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit, 6 whom he poured out on us richly through Jesus Christ our Savior, 7 so that being justified by his grace we might become heirs according to the hope of eternal life.” (ESV) She was confirmed on April 2nd 1950 (Palm Sunday) at First German Lutheran, confessing the faith which Christ worked in her in baptism and sustained through His Word. Romans 10:9-10, “If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For with the heart one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved.” (ESV) Joanne graduated from the high school at Dr. Martin Luther College in New Ulm, MN in 1954. She then continued her studies at DMLC in the college department, preparing to be a Christian Day School teacher. After graduating in 1957 she taught in Akaska, SD. While there, she met John. On August 10, 1958, she married John H. Johannes at First German Lutheran Church in Manitowoc, WI. The Lord blessed them with 61 years of marriage before taking John to Himself on November 21, 2019. Genesis 2:23-24, “Then the man said, “This at last is bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man.” 24 Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.” (ESV) After her teaching years, Joanne turned her attention to caring for her family, whom she loved dearly. She liked to read, do puzzle books, needlework and play bingo. Joanne was a member of Living Hope Lutheran Church in Appleton, WI. She is survived by her children: David (Karen) Johannes of Eau Claire, Timothy (Brenda) Johannes of Fond du Lac, John Johannes of Chippewa Falls, Beth (Jonathan) Sandeen of Chippewa Falls, Deborah (Mark) King of Appleton and Michael Johannes of Menasha; eight grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren, her sister Anne (Dennis) Busse of Milwaukee, and other family members. She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband Rev. John Johannes, her son Mark Johannes and her brother Arthur Paulmann. Psalm 116:8-9, 15 You have delivered my soul from death, my eyes from tears, my feet from stumbling; 9 I will walk before the Lord in the land of the living. 15 Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of his saints. VISITATION: Friends may call from 3:30 – 4:30 PM on Wednesday, January 19, 2022, at Luther Memorial Church, 134 21st Street, Fond du Lac. SERVICE: Memorial services will be held on Wednesday, January 19, 2022 at 4:30 PM, at Luther Memorial Church, Fond du Lac, WI, with Pastor David Ude officiating.
