Roger H. Wessel

Roger H. Wessel, 78, of 420 Amory Street, Fond du Lac, died Thursday, November 30, 2006, at Fond du Lac Lutheran Home.He was born on May 29, 1928, in Fairmont, Minnesota, a son of Edward and Amanda Nolte Wessel.Roger graduated from Dr. Martin Luther College in New Ulm, MN, in 1950. Then, he was drafted into the United States Army during the Korean War. He served from 1951-1953 as a clerk in an engineering unit and was honorably discharged as a Sergeant and was awarded the Bronze Star. On August 7, 1954, he married Alice M. Eichsteadt in Sugarbush, Wisconsin. Roger worked as an elementary school teacher, choir director, and organist for over 40 years. He worked at St. Peter’s Ev. Lutheran School, Fond du Lac, for the last 16 years of his teaching career and remained an active member following his retirement in 1995.Roger was an avid sports fan, and especially enjoyed listening to Brewers and Twins games. Music was a big part of his life and his retirement gave him time to listen to the classical music he loved. He was very interested in trivia and had a great deal of knowledge in the areas of English and history. He is survived by his wife, Alice; six children: Sherwood (Beth) Wessel of St. James, Minnesota, Nathan Wessel of Fond du Lac, Nicholas Wessel of Fond du Lac, Dr. Jeremy Wessel of Thibodaux, Louisiana, Rev. Benjamin Wessel of West Allis, Heidi (Bruce) Zabel of Fond du Lac; seven grandchildren: David (Marci) Wessel of McKinney, Texas, Kristina Wessel of Dominican Republic, Faith and Rachel Wessel of St. James, Minnesota, Josiah, Hannah and Jedidiah Zabel of Fond du Lac; five brothers: Edward (Sylvia) Wessel of Fairmont, MN, Reinhart (Kathy) Wessel of Truman, MN, Loren (Beulah) Wessel of Truman, MN, Howard (Lucille) Wessel, of New Ulm, MN, and Walter (Naomi) Wessel of Carlisle, MN; two sisters: Luella Jurgensen of Mankato, MN, and Elfrieda Turnmire of Claremont, MN; a sister-in-law, Luella Wessel of Truman, MN. He is further survived by many cousins, nieces, and nephews.He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Matthew M. Wessel on July 11, 2005; a brother, Harold Wessel; two brothers-in-law: Donald Jurgensen and Roy Turnmire.The funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, December 2, 2006, at St. Peter’s Ev. Lutheran Church, 35 E. Second Street, Fond du Lac, with Rev. Jon N. Cox officiating. Entombment will be in Ledgeview Memorial Park. The visitation will be on Saturday at church from 11:00 a.m. until the time of service.
